Meet the Governors

Marcia Wolstencroft –Chair of Governors/Foundation Governor

I joined Holy Cross Governing Body as a Foundation Governor in 2003, after I retired from the role of an Education Adviser with Plymouth LA. ,

I have been Chair of Governors for several years and was involved in the formation of The Mary of The Cross Federation with The Cathedral School in 2012.

This has enabled me to use my experience and expertise of working in education to support, challenge and advise the schools and their communities.

It has been a great privilege and pleasure to work with the whole community of both schools. They have a very strong catholic ethos and offer quality education and learning experiences to the children in their care.

As Chair of Governors, I regularly visit both schools to work with Senior Management. I’m involved in meetings, planning, interviews, attending school events, parents’ meetings and, most positively, meeting with the children and observing their learning!

  • Mrs Pauline Hands

    Vice Chair of Governors

Pauline Hands –Vice Chair of Governors/ Foundation Governor

As well as my role of Governor, I have been part of the Mary of the Cross Federation family (and particularly Holy Cross) since 2003 with my first daughter going through the school and now my second daughter in Year 6.  Although recently re-joining the Governing body, I also held a position of Foundation Governor/Vice Chair of Governors for 8 years (with a 2 year break due to work commitments).   I also work within the education sector at City College Plymouth as Director of Marketing, Corporate Relations & Enterprise.

As a Governor my role is to act in a supportive capacity for the senior management and staff, to bring my experience to the team, as well as acting as a “critical friend”.  Furthermore, as a parent I can readily understand that sometimes it is easier to speak to another parent and I can represent their views and signpost to the relevant school representative.

Being a Governor and part of the Governing body is vital to the running of both schools and I am pleased that I can be part of this to assist in acting as a sounding board, enabling decisions to be made and ensuring that we work together with all staff, parents/guardians and pupils, so that we can continue in providing excellent teaching and learning for our pupils.

  • Mrs Marguerite Sperring

    Safeguarding Governor

Marguerite Sperring-Foundation Governor

My name is Marguerite Sperring and I am a Foundation Governor. I bring my skills as a trained and qualified HR specialist to support the School and Governing Body. I also bring my deep faith and desire for a safe environment for staff and pupils to support the School and Governing Body. I sit on the relevant committees where my skills can be best utilised (RE, Safeguarding and HR). I also visit the schools at various times (e.g. parent evenings) to be a face the pupils and parents recognise as that of a governor and hopefully one that is approachable.

I am proud to be involved with the Governing Body because I believe in both Schools and what they want to achieve. The passion for doing the best for the pupils and staff is evident in what is said and done and I want to be associated with people that have that passion.

Lisa Martin - Parent Governor
Having lived overseas for a number of years, I am a relatively new parent to both Holy Cross and Plymouth. I am open minded and progressive, but I do enjoy and appreciate the many school traditions.

I am a staunch supporter of Holy Cross and will enjoy being able to shape the way forward for the school.
  • Mr Tim Driscoll

    Teacher Governor

Tim Driscoll - Teacher Governor
My journey within the Mary of the Cross Federation started in 1990 as a pupil of Holy Cross. The school has always been a place of happy memories, instilling a love and passion for learning as well as self-belief that anything is possible. It was then and still is now, a place of nurture and care where the children learn to place God at the centre of all that we do and recognise the value of every individual. It is because of these qualities that I joined the governing body as a staff governor , allowing me to give something back to a place that has given me so much.

I have the unique benefit of having worked in both of our federated schools. Before moving to Holy Cross to teach Year 2 in September 2015, I spent 4 years as the Year 5/6 teacher at The Cathedral School. Whilst in this position I was also staff governor. Having an insight into the workings of both schools and knowing both sets of staff allows me to make suggestions that utilises the strengths of across the federation to further enhance the learning for the children in our care.
  • Miss Chelsea Mildren

    Teacher Governor

Chelsea Mildren - Teacher Governor
My passion and drive for teaching began in 2008 as a City of Plymouth College student during my first placement at The Cathedral school. I was fortunate to experience children showing such a love of learning and happiness while at school, this is due to the nurturing, caring and welcoming environment that offers opportunities to every child to reach their full potential. I continued my teaching journey at The university of St Mark and St John and studied Children, Welfare and Society. I then completed my PGCE at Plymouth University. I am a foundation/ year 1 teacher and currently am in my third year of teaching at the Cathedral School.

Bogdan Radu-Foundation Governor

Mr. Paul Cotter asked me to be foundation Governor, in September 2014, I have a degree in History (1995, Bucharest University) and one in Finance (2010, ASE i.e. Business School, Bucharest).   In Romania I used to be a teacher of Mathematics, a History teacher and a letting agent.   I moved to the UK (Plymouth) in September 2010 and I worked as a Private Hire Taxi Driver since November 2010.

Both my younger children, Robert and Alexia have been students of the Cathedral School of St. Mary, and they were given an outstanding education there.   I am very grateful for all this and my activity as a Governor is a little way of showing it.   As an expat I can use my expertise in order to make the integration of expat students a little bit smoother.   As a future teacher of Mathematics, I also can help the children who need special help in this field.
